Learning from Kassel (Von Kassel lernen)

The fifth issue of Art Education Research, entitled «Von Kassel lernen» (Learning from Kassel) reflects on the intersection between cultural and political education, and is based on the example of the «documenta 12 advisory board».

On the occasion of the opening of documenta 13 on the 9th of June 2012, the authors Wanda Wieczorek, Ayşe Güleç and Carmen Mörsch look back on the attempt to collaborate with residents of Kassel in the context of documenta 12.

From their analysis of the documenta 12 advisory board, its genesis, contexts, interactions, heterogeneous interests and complex power structures, the authors derive a set of systematic  practical guidelines.  They also specify the structural and substantive requirements needed for art institutions to collaborate on a level playing field with different publics.
